Rotating Type

In another collaboration with Jan Kubasiewicz, I authored a software tool that enables the artist to explore visual typographical forms. These compositions are made by layering several “discs,” each one generated by rendering the outline of a letterform and rotating that form around its center. The artist controls the density of form (i.e., the number of rotations) as well as which characters and typefaces are used.

The software can generate scalable PDFs or run live, cycling through all possible characters, hypnotically rotating and scaling the discs to generate an infinite variety of compositions, never repeating itself.

Both the live software and posters generated from it were exhibited in Lodz, Poland in November 2011.
