Old. Bvilding. Period.

2007 June 28

The letters “u” and “v” used to be written the same way--as “v”. So it makes sense when I see “Carnegie Bvilding” carved into stone. What doesn’t make sense is why so many old buildings names are terminated with a period (or what I assume is a period). Can anyone explain this to me?

These exaggerated ascenders and descenders hang so far out into space, they no longer feel connected to the letter they are intended to represent. I like that, and I also like the minimal f that lacks a cross-stroke, since it’s perfectly legible without it.
