“R” is for Relief

A stark, open “R” clearly marks this lightship docked near Oakland’s Jack London Square. From Wikipedia:

Lightships, for visibility purposes, normally had bright red hulls which displayed the name of the station that the ship marked in white upper case letters; relief light vessels displayed the word RELIEF instead.
